Why the Horror Genre? EC

 Agenda:

  • Warm-up: https://youtu.be/ftRvqZy2FfM
  • Journal: Background: We eventually will be reading one of Faulkner’s short stories.  Before we get into that, we have to really grasp a key theme that has arisen the past few weeks: certain genres help authors convey their ideas better than others.  Just like an author must choose what literary devices work best, authors must choose a genre.  The Gothic/horror is one genre that has not faded since Poe’s time.  You’ve already gotten a glimpse of why it became a genre to reflect on the South after the Civil War.  Use this activity to understand why it continues to be used today (which will help you understand the Southern Gothic even better).
  • In a paragraph, discuss the main idea of Louise Zhang’s Tedx Talk.  Which part resonated most with you?  Explain.  (You may instead discuss why you did not agree with her if that is how you felt.)

Homework:
  • Submit journal
